Default Adventures in Linux Gaming.

(This isn't a tech support request, just a little anecdote)
Ok, I am a Linux user. No Dual Boot or anything. Just pure Ubuntu. I happen to like Guild Wars Prophecies, so I wanted to put in on my linux laptop so I could play it any time.
Well, first I actually had to get the game, for obvious reasons. So I went to my local Target. You know, because It's sort of hard to play with out a game.

Well, they had one copy, and apparently someone had managed to thwart the Plastic sticker Anti-theft system, and took the disk out. So after driving all over town, we finally found a Prophecies disk. I guess it's partially my fault. Don't ask, It involves a target gift card.

So, after playing it on my dads computer, I looked around for a windows XP disk so I could dual boot. Well, we had one, so everything seemed fine.
However, it required a certificate to unlock. And you know that no one keeps that thing... And it Didn't tell me until my ubuntu installation was screwed.

So I had to reinstall, I lost all my files (Thank god all my school stuff is stored remotely) and I am now with one Guild wars account, and nothing to play it on.

I mean, If I could get the code, I could dual boot no problem, or I could probably just go out and buy XP, but for that price I could have just gotten a subscription MMO that works on wine, or runs natively

And I sure as hell ain't going to subscribe to Cedaga... I'm Cheap.

So, I guess I'll just have to dig up another disk, or an unlock code for XP, and pray A-Net makes a client for Unix based... It would Work on apple too...

Oh well, I'll think of something...

Just get Wine. Its a free open source windows emulator for linux and it doesn't require an installation of windows.

Someone over at TGH (www.guild-hall.net/forum) successfully ran GW on Cedega but that doesn't help you. I don't know if it runs on wine - but worth a try. Someone posted that they called Microsoft when they lost their key and got a new one. Also there are some "key recovery" programs out there but I think a lot of those are in the grey area/loaded with malware.

It doesn't work on Wine. It may for one update, but for the next you'll get nothing.
I might be able to find a key and a disk somewhere. After All, Vista just came out, so XP shouldn't be to difficult to get. Oh well.
I just hope I can get it up and running before Canthan New Year. I could probably make a PvP to acess the event via the Great Temple, but I'm not sure that would work, but the fact I've only recently left pre-searing shouldn't be a problem.

Guild Wars runs beautifully under Wine. There's a large post about it on the Ubuntu forums, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=283122.

WINE Is Not an Emulator; it's a compatability layer.

You don't need CEDEGA to play Guild Wars, provided you know what you're doing. CEDEGA essentially only provides minor code changes and config files for WINE.

I'm not sure how watered down Ubuntu is (I really hate all the "Linux for noobs" distros ), but WINE should be in the Debian repositories somewhere, if you want to go that route. You might need to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file to get them though (again, I have no clue how up to date Ubuntu's repositories are).

You can also pull CEDEGA from CVS for free, and build it yourself.

The most well known 'key finder' is this one. I'm fairly certain that it contains no malware.

^ Oh come on, now you're just splitting hairs. I know it's not technically an emulator, but it's close enough and more people know what it means
(besides, I've only heard of wine from other people so I know very little about it)

Yes, I am arguing semantics. However, WINE doesn't emulate anything, so it's not "close enough" at all.

Sweet, I didn't think you could get Cedega for free w00t. I might give it a try now.
